What is UX Design?
User Experience Design (UX) is the discipline focused on the entirety of the experience a person has when interacting with a digital product — not just its visual appearance, but also how easy, efficient and satisfying that interaction is.
The term was popularized by Don Norman (Apple) in the 1990s and today encompasses user research, information architecture, prototyping, usability testing and much more.
Why Does UX Matter?
The numbers are compelling:
- 88% of online users won't return to a website after a bad experience (Econsultancy).
- Every dollar invested in UX generates an average return of $100 (Forrester Research).
- A site with good usability can increase conversions by up to 400%.
- Google uses user behavior signals (time on page, bounce rate, CTR) as SEO ranking factors.
The UX Design Process
UX design is not a linear activity — it's an iterative cycle. The main stages are:
- 1. Research: user interviews, surveys, competitor analysis and analytics review to understand who the users are, what they need and where current problems lie.
- 2. Definition: synthesizing findings into tools like Personas, Customer Journey Maps and How Might We (HMW) to define the problems to solve.
- 3. Ideation: generating ideas and solutions through techniques like brainstorming, Crazy 8s or Design Sprints.
- 4. Prototyping: creating wireframes (low fidelity) and interactive prototypes (high fidelity) to materialize ideas without writing code.
- 5. Usability Testing: tests with real users to validate that the design solves the identified problems. Friction points are identified before development.
- 6. Iteration: based on feedback, the design is improved and the cycle repeats.
UX Methodologies and Tools
- Design Thinking: a user-centered methodology that combines empathy, creativity and rationality to solve complex problems.
- Jobs to be Done (JTBD): an approach that understands user behavior based on the "jobs" they want to accomplish with your product.
- Nielsen's Heuristics: 10 usability principles created by Jakob Nielsen used to evaluate interfaces.
- Tools: Figma (prototyping), Maze or Hotjar (testing), Miro (ideation), Mixpanel or Google Analytics (behavior analytics).
User Experience Metrics
- Conversion rate: percentage of users who complete the desired action (purchase, registration, inquiry).
- Bounce rate: percentage who leave the site without interacting.
- Time on task: how long it takes a user to complete a specific action.
- NPS (Net Promoter Score): measures user satisfaction and loyalty.
- CSAT (Customer Satisfaction Score): satisfaction with a specific interaction.
- Core Web Vitals: Google metrics that measure perceived performance (LCP, FID, CLS).
UX Trends in 2024
- UX Writing: text as a design element. Every word in an interface is a UX decision.
- Inclusive design and accessibility: designing for the greatest possible diversity of users, following WCAG 2.2 standards.
- Voice UX: designing experiences for voice interfaces (assistants, voice commands).
- AI-Powered Personalization: experiences that adapt to each user's individual behavior in real time.
- Ethical Design: design that respects privacy, avoids dark patterns and prioritizes user well-being.
